Sound Steps (2015)
The development of this project was made possible through the support of the Worth Project, an initiative dedicated to fostering creativity and innovation by supporting partnerships between designers, manufacturers, and technology specialists.
The shoes feature an integrated speaker system that broadcasts the generated sounds in real-time, synchronising audio output with foot movements to create a seamless interaction between body and sound. By wearing the shoes, users can produce rhythm and melody as they move. The sound profiles are customisable, enabling wearers to experiment with different sonic textures and transform the sound of their steps into anything from percussion to ambient tones.
This project exemplifies the power of interdisciplinary collaboration, combining the expertise of POPKALAB in wearable technology, Phonotonic’s innovative approach to sound generation, and Stéphane Gontard’s craftsmanship in footwear design.
POPKALAB collaborated with Phonotonic and Stéphane Gontard to design multi-tech shoes that transform movement into music, offering wearers a playful and intuitive way to create soundscapes. This innovative footwear integrates advanced motion-sensing technology to translate the natural movements of walking, running, or dancing into dynamic musical compositions. With these shoes, music creation becomes a fully embodied experience, democratising access to musical expression and allowing anyone, regardless of prior experience, to compose and perform through movement.
