Feather Tales II
It Feather Tales II is a responsive environment that brings to life an imagined scenario where the secretive dialogue between electromagnetic waves and material surroundings becomes partially visible. This interplay is revealed through hypersensitive surfaces covered with white ostrich feathers. When waves emitted by mobile communication devices signals traverse the exhibition space, the surfaces involuntarily respond, displaying the phenomenon of horripilation—commonly known as goosebumps. This natural reaction evokes a range of emotional states, such as irritation, fear, admiration, and desire, leaving the visitors aware of the dialogue but oblivious to the emotions driving it.
The installation consists of 200 reactive units, each incorporating an electromagnetic signal sensor, a microprocessor, a servo motor, and movable feathers. Together, they hold 1000 feathers distributed throughout the 'Sala de Columnas' at LABoral. These units are attuned to detect signals across various frequencies, including mobile telephony, WiFi, and Bluetooth. Visitors can engage with the environment through their personal devices, making the invisible connections between technology and space perceptible.
The work was one of three projects awarded in LABoral's Project's Office call.
